Tony Jacklin

By winning the Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Annes in 1969, Tony not only became a national hero, he also singlehandedly sparked a revival of golf among British youth when he became the first British player since Max Faulkner in 1951 to win the championship. One year later Jacklin continued his history making streak when he became the first player since Ben Hogan to hold both the U.S. and British Open titles simultaneously upon his triumph at Hazeltine Golf Club. Jacklin endured extraordinary conditions, including 40mph winds that howled through the Great Plains. He shot 71 in the first round on a day when Arnold Palmer posted 79, Gary Player 80, and Jack Nicklaus 81. Jacklin led from start to finish and was the only player to break par in the tournament. He holed a 30-foot birdie putt at the last hole to put an exclamation mark on a glorious week. Few champions ever travelled to glory in as steady a march or by as decisive a margin of victory. His seven-stroke triumph was the largest margin in 49 years. Jacklin also became the first British player to win the U.S. Open since Ted Ray in 1920. A superstar of world golf, Jacklin was a consistent performer on the PGA Tour and continued to win tournaments on the European Tour, including the Dunlop Masters, the PGA Championship, the Jersey Open and the Braun German Open.

Gary Player

Gary Player is a legend in his own time. The most successful international golfer of all time, Player has achieved the kind of worldwide acclaim reserved for only a handful of sporting greats. He is, quite simply, world class. Gary Player is renowned as much for his dedication to the principles of excellence as he is for his golfing accomplishments. He is recognized worldwide as an uncompromising perfectionist who settles for nothing but the best. His impeccable set of values, stringent regimen of health and fitness, and insistence on quality, have earned him admiration the world over.

Recognized around the globe as the Black Knight, Mr. Fitness and the International Ambassador of Golf, Gary Player is also a renowned golf course architect with over 325 design projects throughout the world.  Black Knight International, the company founded by his son Marc Player, includes Gary Player Design, Player Real Estate, Gary Player Enterprises and The Player Foundation.

Ted Bishop

The 38th President of The PGA of America, Ted Bishop previously served two years each as PGA Vice President and PGA Secretary, where he championed programs to grow the game. In addition, he has served on the PGA Board of Directors as District 6 Director. Since 1991, Bishop has worked as general manager and PGA director of golf at The Legends Golf Club, in Franklin, Ind. n 1991, Bishop oversaw the construction and development of The Legends Golf Club, a 45-hole complex that is the home of the Indiana PGA Section and Indiana Golf Association. Bishop played a key role in the organization of the Indiana Golf Foundation. His efforts in the early 1990s helped establish the Indiana Golf Academy and the expansion of the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame.

Born in Logansport, Ind., Bishop graduated in 1976 from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy. He began his professional career as a PGA Professional and superintendent at the Phil Harris Golf Course in Linton, Ind. He was elected to PGA membership in September 1985, and has served in a leadership capacity at either the Section or National levels since 1989. From 1997-98, Bishop served as president of the Indiana PGA Section. He was named the 1998 Indiana PGA Golf Professional of the Year. He is also a two-time (1996-97) Section Bill Strausbaugh Award recipient and was the Section’s 1991 Horton Smith Award winner. In the fall of 2013, he will become the third PGA of America president to be inducted into the Indiana Golf Hall of Fame.

On the course, Bishop was a four-time Indiana Open qualifier, with three holes-in-one to his credit. A contributing writer, Bishop is regularly published by the likes of SI.com, PGA.com and several Indiana newspapers. He has twice been awarded the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash by the Governor of Indiana for service to the communities in which he has resided.

During his golf career, Beman qualified for his first U.S. Open at age 17 in 1955. He qualified for the Masters Tournament 14 times. He won the U.S. Amateur twice and the British Amateur once. He also lost a playoff to Gary Cowan for the 1966 U.S. Amateur. Beman turned professional in 1967 at age 29 and won four times on the PGA Tour between 1969 and 1973. Beman led for two rounds at the 1969 U.S. Open and finished one shot out of a playoff. He was a short hitter by top-class standards, with an outstanding short game, and was renowned as one of the best putters in the world. Injuries curtailed his playing career. When Thomas and first assistant Larry Griffin returned, a crowd had formed to watch the animated young man, hanging on his every word. From that moment on, Brian Manzella’s teaching has always attracted a crowd. And the crowd is growing everyday.
